Oil Painting the Still Life

 March 6th - I will begin by talking about materials and supplies.  Then I will do a monochromatic demo.  You will then paint only using black and white, and a varying degree of grays. 

March 13th - First you will watch a quick demo of the still life before you begin your painting using a limited palette. 

March 20th - You will paint the still life, while I discuss the importance of negative space in your still life and composition. 

March 27th - This week, I will explain the various different types of  brush strokes and techniques used in an oil painting.  You will also be painting another still life.
 
April 3rd -  This will be our fifth painting! By now you should feel very confident in your ability to block in and refine your painting while still keeping nice loose strokes.  During this class, I will discuss color mixing and theory. 

April 10th - Final class and Still Life painting for this 6 week session.  During this class, I will talk about how to properly frame your artwork.

Please Note:
***For the first week, you will only need 2 size 12 and 2 size 10 brushes.  You also only need Ivory Black and Titanium White for your oil paints. 

• Oil paint
  • Lemon Yellow or Cad yellow light 
  • Crimson
  • French Ultra Marine 
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Titanium White
• Brushes-Flat or bright synthetic Hog hair 
  • 2 size 12 
  • 2 size 10
  • 2 size 6
  • 2 size 4
• Palette or paper palette 
• Low odor Mineral Spirits/ Turpenoid  or Turpenoid Natural and empty glass jar to put it in. 
• Linseed Oil and medium cups found at art store/ or small (clean) cat food tin. 
• Canvas - 8 x 10 inches  -  10 canvas panels, canvas paper, or stretched 
• Easel 
• Paper Towels
• Optional: smock and latex gloves

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE - SHEILA MASHAW

I began painting in 2002  at the age of 42, when one day I thought I wanted to try to paint. My youngest children of 7 were going to be starting Kindergarten in the fall, and I didnt know what I wanted to do with my time after being a stay at home mom with preschoolers at home with me for 20 years.  So, without any training or lessons, I went to the local art store and bought a few small brushes,a pack of canvas board, and some acrylic paint for a total of $16.00. I started painting a landscape out of my imagination. It was very enjoyable, and there was more I wanted to learn because I just loved the way the paint moved on the canvas.  I thought to myself there is no way I will ever make this happen again.  I don't know why it happens, it just does. I then created a website and uploaded my early paintings.  My work was noticed by a wonderful artist from Hawaii which encouraged and mentored me. He advised me on books to read, groups to join, as well as taking lessons from the community college in my area.  
 
My favorite medium is Oil Painting, although I play around with other mediums at times. I love painting Plein Air (Alla Prima), but will also paint studio paintings from life, and sometimes using reference photos. 
 
I have been accepted into numerous juried exhibits, member shows, and have  exhibited in solo shows since I began entering in 2004. My website goes into more detail about shows participated in, and awards won. 
 
I am currently a member of Oil Painters Of America, IPAP, past VP of Burlington County Art Guild, Member of Willingboro Art Alliance, Rancocas Valley Plein Air Painters, and Medford Arts Center.
