Drawing with Lauren Arno - Teen & Adult Class

Instructor: Lauren Arno

The Class will use an assortment of colored pencils on a variety of paper. Each class will begin with a lesson on materials, techniques, or color and composition. Then students will work from still life set-ups, or their own photographs.

Lauren Arno: INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
Lauren Arno is an artist living in southern New Jersey who specializes in watercolor portraits of people and pets as well as floral paintings. She is a TCNJ graduate with a BA in art education and a masters in special education from Rowan University.
Artist Statement
I believe I have always been an artist. As a child I was always singing and drawing or painting. I try to find beauty everywhere I look. I examine colors, patterns, and shapes in the world around me. I am most fond of painting portraits. I don’t want to paint beautiful people, rather I desire to paint people beautifully.

Drawing paper pad - at least 12x9”  (Canson XL or Blick paper is great paper)
Drawing pencils - HB, H, 4B or 6B
Vinyl or Gum Eraser
Kneaded eraser
Blending stumps or Tortillions or cotton buds

Week 1: Value
Meet and greet
            Review supplies
            Demonstrate value scale
            Demonstrate types of shading
                        Blending
                        Hatching         
                        Cross Hatching
                        Stippling         
                        Scribbling
Lesson Exercises- create a five point value scale in graphite.
                        Use value to create illusion of 3D shape
 
Week 2:  Line Quality
Critique and review of value exercises
            Introduction of line quality
            Demonstrate pressure
            Demonstrate light and emphasized lines
            Introduction to building composition with line
Lesson Exercises- Contour drawings, Blind contour drawings, Continuous contour line drawing
 
Week 3: Finding Shapes
 Critique and review of line exercises
            Introduction to finding shapes
            Demonstrate finding positive and negative shapes
Lesson Exercises- drawing a plant from negative space. 
 
Week 4: Lost and Found Edges
Critique and review of negative space plant drawings
            Introduction to still life drawing
            Gesture drawing
            Choosing a composition
            Lost and found edges
