Instructor Profile “It is never too early to begin to draw and make your first mark! Everyone can draw. It is learnable. I’m already teaching my 10 month-old granddaughter! My new book, The Joy of Drawing: A Mindfulness Approach, is designed to be used in a foundational drawing course in the classroom or online. It can be used, too, for personal development. This book stands out in many ways: I highlighted many women and minority artists to underscore inclusion as part of the power of artistic expression. Also, I teach from theories of Mindfulness: coming to experience a peace while becoming more in touch with your ideas and emotions. The chapters are arranged so that you develop a strong understanding of the formal elements in art - line, value, texture, shape, space, and color. You learn the visual language of drawing. While enhancing the foundational drawing skills, the lessons help students get into the right frame of mind by helping them become awareness of their eyes, hands, brain, and breath. Other key elements of drawing are emphasized, based on that foundation of mindfulness: understanding materials and techniques; and, using works of art to promote close engagement and analysis while learning to use the tools of drawing. This method helps critical thinking skills while learning to draw. The ideas in this book come from more than twenty-five years of experience in teaching drawing. The title was inspired by students describing the "joy" they felt while drawing. Students’ evaluations of my classes repeatedly expressed the “joy” they felt while learning. Students expressed how surprised they were they could draw, that they could let go of their fears, dismiss preconceived notions of what drawing was; and discover concentration and relaxation when settling down to draw. Exciting, fun, and creative exercises are included to bring awareness to your breath and body as you draw. You will be amazed at how your perspective changes. You will be amazed at how you will see vivid colors when the sun sets, when a wave turns over. You will notice the geometry of buildings, the textures while walking in the woods. You will begin to stop and really open your eyes to “see.” Drawing teaches us to be present, calming our minds.” |
